Formerly EN19 / EN19C / EN19T

708M40 (formerly EN19) is one of the most widely used alloy engineering steels in the UK. Chromium and molybdenum content gives excellent hardenability, high tensile strength and good wear resistance after heat treatment. The standard choice for medium to high-stressed shafts, gears and engineering components where EN8 strength is insufficient but the full nickel content of EN24 is not required.

Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

Preheat to 200–300°C before welding. Post-weld stress relief at 600–650°C strongly recommended for stressed components. Avoid welding in T (Q+T) condition without specialist procedure. Hardening: oil quench from 840–870°C. Tempering: 550–660°C to achieve required tensile range. Higher tempering temperature gives better toughness at reduced strength.
