EN19 vs EN24T — When to Upgrade.

EN19 and EN24T are both chromium-molybdenum alloy steels, but EN24T adds nickel for deeper hardenability and better toughness in large sections. Knowing when the upgrade is justified — and when EN19 is sufficient — is the key decision for engineers specifying high-tensile components.

Why Nickel Makes the Difference

The Role of Nickel in EN24T.

The addition of 1.30–1.70% nickel to EN24T (vs no nickel in EN19) does two things: it improves deep-section hardenability by stabilising austenite during the quench — allowing martensite to form even in sections well above 65mm — and it improves toughness, especially at low temperatures.

Section hardenability in practice:
EN19: hardening fully achieved in ≤65mm. Above this, the centre becomes progressively softer.
EN24T: hardening achieved in sections exceeding 100mm — suitable for large-diameter oil and gas components, heavy-duty shafts and aerospace structural parts where full-section properties are essential.

The pre-treated (T suffix) supply condition of EN24T means the bar arrives with guaranteed mechanical properties throughout its cross-section. The end user machines it directly to drawing — no further heat treatment is required and no quench distortion risk is introduced.

When to Choose Each Grade

Making the Right Decision.

Choose EN19 (42CrMo4) when:
  • Section is below 65mm and full through-hardening is required
  • High tensile is needed at lower cost than EN24T
  • Automotive transmission shafts and gearbox components
  • Oil and gas valve bodies and wellhead components
  • High-tensile bolting and studs
  • General medium-to-high stressed engineering shafts
  • EN24T toughness is not specified or required
Choose EN24T (34CrNiMo6 / 4340) when:
  • Section exceeds 65mm and full through-hardening is required
  • Aerospace or defence specification requires 4340 / 34CrNiMo6
  • Maximum toughness is required alongside high tensile strength
  • Low-temperature service where impact toughness is critical
  • Oil and gas downhole drill collars and BHA components
  • Pre-treated supply is preferred — machine directly without heat treatment
  • Drawing specifies 817M40T, 34CrNiMo6 or AISI 4340
