Grey vs SG Cast Iron — Which Iron?

Grey iron and SG (spheroidal graphite, also called ductile or nodular) iron are both continuous cast iron bars — but the shape of the graphite inside them makes them behave like two different materials. Flakes give grey iron its famous damping and machinability; spheres give SG iron steel-like strength and ductility. Here is how to choose.

Why Graphite Shape Decides Everything

Flakes vs Spheres.

In grey iron, graphite flakes thread through the structure like tiny internal notches. Under compression they are harmless — which is why grey iron's compressive strength (~900 N/mm²) embarrasses its tensile figure — and they make the material easy to machine and superb at damping vibration. Under tension, though, each flake tip concentrates stress, so the material fails early and without warning.

The SG difference: a magnesium treatment during casting rounds the graphite into spheres. With no sharp flake tips, the iron suddenly behaves like a steel — real yield strength, real elongation, real shock tolerance — while keeping cast iron's machinability and lower density. That is why SG iron is also called ductile iron.

The three SG grades we stock trade ductility against strength: EN-GJS-400C is ferritic, the most ductile and impact-tough; EN-GJS-500C is the general-purpose balance; EN-GJS-600C is the strongest and most wear-resistant. When to Choose Each Iron

Making the Right Decision.

Choose Grey Iron (GJL-250) when:
  • Loading is mainly compressive — bases, housings, spacers
  • Vibration damping matters — machine tool parts, slideways
  • Bearing surfaces — bushes, glands, wear pads
  • Jigs, fixtures and tooling plates machined in volume
  • Maximum machinability and lowest cost per part
  • No shock or significant tensile load in service
Choose SG Iron (GJS-400/500/600) when:
  • The part sees tensile, bending or shock loads
  • Gears, sprockets, rolls and rotating components
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic components, manifolds, glands
  • Valve and pump bodies under pressure
  • Impact toughness is required — pick ferritic GJS-400C
  • Higher wear resistance is required — pick GJS-600C
