PS QA 013 — Ductile Cast Iron Bar

EN-GJS-400C

EN-GJS-400-15 / EN-JS1030
Ductile / SG / Nodular Iron Bar

Ferritic spheroidal-graphite (ductile / SG) cast iron bar, continuously cast to a dense, pressure-tight section. The graphite is present as spheroidal nodules rather than flakes, giving ductile iron its high tensile strength, ductility and impact toughness while retaining good machinability. EN-GJS-400C is the ferritic ductile grade — specified where elongation, shock loading and leak-tightness matter.

Applications

Typical Applications.

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic manifolds
  • Pressure-tight valve and pump bodies
  • Pipe fittings and flanges
  • Machine bases and brackets
  • Wheel hubs and axle components
  • Shock-loaded general engineering components
Benefits

Key Benefits.

  • High ductility and impact toughness for a cast iron
  • Pressure-tight — ideal for hydraulic bodies
  • Good machinability from nodular graphite
  • Better shock resistance than grey iron
  • Castable to complex, dense sections
Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

Ductile (SG) iron tolerates tensile and impact loading far better than grey cast iron because the spheroidal graphite does not act as an internal crack initiator. EN-GJS-400C is the most ductile of the standard grades, with a predominantly ferritic matrix. Weldable with nickel electrodes and pre-heat where essential. Properties quoted are for the as-cast condition and vary with section size.
