|---|---|---|
| Carbon (total) | 3.40–3.80 | Spheroidal graphite nodules |
| Silicon (Si) | 2.10–2.80 | Ferritic-pearlitic matrix |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.20–0.50 | Promotes pearlite |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.05 max | |
| Magnesium (Mg) | 0.03–0.06 | Nodularising agent (residual) |

Mechanical Properties.
Indicative values to BS EN 1563. Properties vary by section size and matrix condition.
| Designation | Tensile Strength (N/mm²) | 0.2% Proof Stress (N/mm²) | Elongation A (%) | Hardness (HB) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EN-GJS-500C / EN-JS1050 | ≥500 (min) | ≥320 | ≥7 | 170–230 |
Hardness values: see our hardness conversion table to convert between HRC, HB, HV and tensile strength.
Typical Applications.
- Gears, sprockets and pinions
- Crankshafts and camshafts
- Hydraulic components and cylinders
- Pump and compressor bodies
- Rollers, sheaves and pulleys
- Machine tool and press components
Key Benefits.
- Balanced strength and ductility for general use
- Higher tensile and proof strength than GJS-400
- Good machinability and surface finish
- Strong, vibration-damping matrix
- Cost-effective alternative to cast steel
Remarks & Guidance.
EN-GJS-500C is the most widely specified ductile grade, with a mixed ferritic-pearlitic matrix giving a good balance of strength, ductility and machinability. Suitable for the majority of loaded machined ductile-iron parts. Weldable with nickel electrodes and pre-heat where essential. Properties vary with section size and as-cast matrix.
