Formerly EN8

080M40 (formerly EN8) is an unalloyed medium carbon steel and one of the most widely used engineering steels in the UK. Significantly stronger than mild steel whilst remaining readily machinable and cost-effective. 080M40 can be flame or induction hardened to achieve good surface hardness and wear resistance while retaining a tough core.

Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

Preheat to 150–250°C before welding and slow-cool afterwards to avoid hydrogen cracking. Post-weld heat treatment recommended for stressed joints. For applications requiring deep section hardening or higher toughness, consider EN19 (708M40) or EN24T (817M40T). Flame and induction hardening achieves 50–55 HRC surface hardness on correctly conditioned material.
