Formerly EN8D

080A42 (formerly EN8D) is a medium carbon steel supplied to chemical analysis specification only — without a full mechanical properties test. Slightly higher in carbon than 080M40 (EN8) and widely used for bolts, studs and general turned components where the full EN8 mechanical certification is not required. The 'A' designation indicates supply to chemical analysis; the 'M' designation (080M40) indicates mechanically tested.

Applications

Typical Applications.

  • Bolts, studs and nuts — medium tensile
  • General turned components
  • Lightly stressed shafts and spindles
  • Keys and couplings
  • Bright-drawn bar applications
Benefits

Key Benefits.

  • Cost-effective where EN8 mechanical certification not required
  • Good machinability in bright drawn condition
  • Suitable for flame hardening
  • Wide range of sizes from stock
Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

For applications requiring guaranteed mechanical properties, specify EN8 (080M40). 080A42 can be flame or induction hardened to 48–55 HRC with appropriate section size and conditioning.
