Formerly EN3B

070M20 (formerly EN3B) is a low carbon mild steel supplied in bright drawn condition. It offers good weldability, reasonable machinability and adequate strength for general light engineering and fabrication applications. It is the most commonly used grade for general-purpose bright bar applications where the higher strength of EN8 is not required. Can be case carburised to improve surface hardness.

Applications

Typical Applications.

  • General-purpose engineering shafts (light duty)
  • Keys, studs, pins and cotters
  • Welded assemblies and fabrications
  • Case carburised components — pins, cams, rollers
  • Woodruff keys and keyways
Benefits

Key Benefits.

  • Good weldability — all conventional processes
  • Good machinability in bright drawn condition
  • Available in wide range of sizes and profiles
  • Case carburisable for improved surface hardness
  • Cost-effective for light engineering applications
Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

Not suitable for through-hardening but responds well to case carburising. Good weldability using MIG, TIG, MMA and resistance welding processes. No preheat normally required for sections up to 25mm. Not to be confused with 210M15 (EN32M) / 080A15 (EN32B), dedicated case hardening grades with tighter carbon control.
