SAE 8620

805M20 (SAE 8620 / 20NiCrMo2) is one of the most widely used case hardening steels worldwide. Balanced Ni-Cr-Mo chemistry gives a good combination of case hardness and core toughness after carburising — at a cost well below the premium EN36 grade. The preferred specification for automotive and general engineering applications where moderate to good performance is required.

Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

Carburise at 880–930°C. Oil quench directly from carburising temperature or pot-cool for double hardening. Temper at 150–200°C. For heavily shock-loaded applications requiring higher core toughness, specify EN36 (655M13) or EN36C (832M13).
