High-Strength Structural Steel

S355 is a high-strength structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm² — significantly higher than the 275 N/mm² of S275/mild steel. Preferred grade for load-bearing components, shafts and fabrications where weight saving or higher loading demands a step up from standard mild steel. The J2 sub-grade confirms Charpy V-notch impact testing at −20°C.

Technical Notes

Remarks & Guidance.

Good weldability for sections to 25mm with standard electrodes above 5°C. For heavier sections or lower ambient temperatures, preheat to 50–100°C. S355 is a structural grade — not intended for precision machined components requiring tight tolerances or high-cycle fatigue applications. Specify an EN-series engineering steel for those applications. J2 designation confirms Charpy V-notch impact testing at −20°C: ≥27J minimum.
