How to Use This Calculator

Select your bar profile using the tabs at the top, then enter the diameter (for round bar), across-flats size (for hexagon), side dimension (for square), or width and thickness (for flat bar).

Enter the length of each piece and the number of pieces in your order. Select your material grade — the density adjusts automatically. Click Calculate to get weight per metre, per foot, total kg and total lbs.

The calculator works in both metric (mm/m) and imperial (inches/feet). Switch between them using the toggle at the top of the calculator.

Steel Weight Formula

Steel weight is calculated from the cross-sectional area multiplied by the length and the material density. For round bar, weight per metre = (π ÷ 4) × D² × density, where D is the diameter in metres.

For hexagon bar, the cross-section area is (√3 ÷ 2) × A² where A is the across-flats dimension. For square bar it is simply S², and for flat bar it is width × thickness.

All grades of carbon and alloy engineering steel — EN1A, EN3B, EN8, EN19, EN24, EN36, S355 — share the same density of 7.85 g/cm³. Grey cast iron is lighter at 7.20 g/cm³.
